Emergence is a unique new multimedia performance that combines live film, theatre, interactive technology and giant puppetry to allow audiences to decide the way a story unfolds over four cinema screens. It is a "choose-your-own-adventure" film that serves as a social experiment, game and installation.
Synarcade Audio-Visuals - a group of fearless multimedia artists - take audiences into an immersive theatre space with the task of "building their own being". The audience must work together, as parents of their being (named "Ram"), to make decisions about the kind of character traits that they want their being to exhibit. Should he be more rational? More independent? Should he have the ability to lie? To question authority?
The being develops over four screens and as he grows so does the level of direct interaction between him and the audience (via different interfaces). Finally the being emerges from the virtual world (cinematic) and into the physical space (theatrical) of his creators, wherein the audience must confront and take responsibility for their creation.
In Emergence anything is possible. Some paths may lead to wondrous creations, others to lawless monsters or strange mutations. And every show will produce a different being so that many will want to return to see where their different choices lead!
Emergence is being developed into a truly innovative cross-platform work. Once audiences have created their being in a performance space they can continue nurturing and interacting with their being online via the Emergence website . They can continue hold conversations with their being or browse what kind of beings are being built by other audiences in other cities. On online forums, they can chat with other parents about the choices they have made or about issues raised in the show.
In addition, a virtual environment allows audiences to come together in groups around the world and build their beings in a virtual space that mirrors the theatrical experience. These beings are then also released and monitored in the same online space as those built in the theatre shows.
